Part 2: From fig leaves to fruit

aisharebeccawritesNovember 16, 2020

So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed. That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;  to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. “In your anger do not sin”. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,  and do not give the devil a foothold.  Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.  Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Ephesians 4:22-24

God has really put on my heart to share with you that you are not what they say you are. Last week, I discussed getting back to the the childlike version of yourself. The pure-hearted, personality traits that God gave to you and knew would help you advance in life, as his child and fulfil your Kingdom assignment. So I definitely recommend checking that out here.

In Ephesians 4 :22, we read that the Lord insists that we as followers of Christ no longer live as Gentiles do. In the spirit of being vulnerable and in the hope that this will help others to understand that they have to stop listening to the lies of the enemy and especially their (fr)enemies, I share the lies spoken over me. But here’s the no so secret – “secret”! I am not what they say I am and you are not what they say you are.

Some people want to see you fail. If they can’t win, then you can’t win either.

We often cling to and hold onto the lies of others. This verse speaks of putting of your old self which is being corrupted my your deceitful desires. But have we ever considered the deceitful desires of others? You know that person that just can’t root for you to win? The one that just put you down after you achieve anything. Ever considered that their deceitful desire could be to watch you fail? Why? Often because they also listen to the deceitfulness of the enemy, of others and if they can’t win you can’t win either.

Them couples with the persistant whisper of the devil and it becaomes difficult to stop listening to the lies. The devil comes in kills, steal and destroy. He comes to kills your dreams, he comes to steal your joy, he intents to destroy who you were created to be.

The Lies spoken over me

  • Perfectionist
  • Paranoid
  • Aggressive
  • Useless
  • Crazy
  • Insignificant
  • Oversensitive
  • Ridiculous
  • Overly Independent

Your are not what they say you are.

What I realised about the lies is they are put in place to cover up the truth of who you are. With each new lie spoken over us a part of who we truly are begins to die. We continue to collect these “fig leaves” and cover ourselves up. Hiding our nakedness – who we are – for fear of being hurt again and again. It’s like a counteractive state. If I keep these I’ll have enough to hide myself and no one can hurt me if they don’t like my nakedness.

We continue to collect these “fig leaves” and cover ourselves up

The truth of who I am in Christ

  • Confident
  • Worthy
  • Kind Spirited
  • Unapologetic
  • Pastoral
  • Bold
  • Self-Assured
  • Warrior Queen
  • Empathetic
  • Compassionate
  • Smart
  • Fierce Lioness
  • Youthful
  • Hospitable

But, we need to stop listening to the lies. To create a strength inside ourselves to quieten the voice of the enemy and listen to the truths of God. You know how that gets easier? Prayer and study. If you don’t have any kind of prayer life, read scripture or worship through the storms, how easy then is it for the enemy to cajole you into believing the opposite of who you are? So I prayed and got others to pray with me. This is what I realised. When you are strong, when you are confident, when you are fierce that intimidates the enemy ad that intimidates the fleshly on earth. Thye cannot handle the greatness bestowed upon you by God so they aim to squash it. To squash you.

It’s time to take the dead and infected leaves off

I found that once I knew who I AM and who’s I am the fig leaves began to fall away. Something my partner said to me the other say whilst I was working on this was “wow those words are not good…”. No, they weren’t. But he continued “…but their leaves right? and it’s autumn now? So I guess it’s time to take the dead and infected leaves off”.

It’s time to take the dead and infected leaves off

That was a real “ah ha” moment in our household, in myself and in him too. It is Autumn. You may go through many seasons of autumn, but the great thing is that if you are willing and ready to take off the things that are not of God, the lies spoken over you and continue to live in watering your plants. Water yourself. Growing fruit becomes easier.

This is who I AM. Who are you?

  • I AM NOT ridiculous I AM smart
  • I AM NOT oversensitive I AM really empathetic
  • If I AM a warrior Queen then I AM positively aggressive
  • When people call me paranoid I AM actually self-assured
  • I CANNOT be insignificant if God says I AM worthy
  • I AM NOT crazy. Have you met a kind spirited crazy person?
  • I CANNOT be useless I AM called to be pastoral
  • I AM not a perfectionist I AM perfectly fine in being confident
  • I CANNOT be overly independent, if I AM a nurturer – you need to depend on people needing to be nurtured and you cannot do that if you are for self and not others

Be what you WANT in a family to others and let God be to you what you NEED.

Samia Goumeidane

A lot of the words others have spoken over us are usually from those who are supposed to protect, love and support us. Parents, siblings or extended family members. But the great thing about being in unity with others and creating you own community is that the people you choose become your family too. Maybe not by blood, but by THE blood of Jesus. I am freer because I make connections. My sisters in Christ prayed for me and I for them. We speak truth into each others minds and hearts. You can speak truth into the lives of others too. Christian or not.

God wants us to go out and be to others what he is for us. My sister in Christ once said that God is all we need, so we should be who we wanted as children to others around us. So, go and be what you WANT in a family to others and let God be to you what you NEED.
