Faith in Action: What is it?

”Faith without works is dead.”

James 2:14-26
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.
20 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? 21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.
25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead. (James 2:14-26 NIV)

If salvation is through faith in Christ, why does James 2:17 say: “faith without works is dead.” ? What happens to the Christian life, after the justification of faith alone? If faith is real and genuine, will it not produce fruit?

Look at Abraham and his (almost) sacrifice of his son Issac. Abraham didn’t just hear God say “sacrifice your son” he acted upon it. Noah didn’t just say “Okay Lord, build an arc you say? I’ll get around to it at some point. He listened, obeyed and TOOK ACTION! Faith without action is futile. We are justified by works and not faith alone.

James isn’t denying that faith is what saved Abraham and was credited to his righteousness. As Christians, we are not supposed to have a faith that is dead, but we are not supposed to hear the word only. We are supposed to live the word and walk by faith. We walk by faith and not by sight. This walking is what produces PRESENT and ETERNAL fruit.

God likes His children hot, not lukewarm.

We need to get up off the sofa .We cannot pick and choose what we believe God is speaking over us and when we will have faith in Him. God likes his children hot, not lukewarm or tepid like Earl Grey tea on a cold winters day. If we are going to progress, then we cannot decide to have faith today, yet not feel it tomorrow. God wants us on fire. He wants us to have faith on fire.

We are justified by works and not by faith alone. A body without a spirit is dead. How’s your spirit doing lately? Faith without works is also dead. You cannot have faith in prayer alone, you have to act on God’s voice during prayer too. Stop asking God to move mountains unless you’re will to pick up a shovel and dig deeper. Pleasing God happens when we have faith and apply action.

“Stop asking God to move mountains unless you’re will to pick up a shovel.”

Faith is just the starting point. God beckons us to move in obedience, when the world tells us it’s impossible to please God without faith have more, do more, ACT more. Go deeper into His word. Connect more with your brothers and sisters in Christ. Take small steps each and every day to do the works God’s calling you to do. To break that stronghold or generational curse plaguing your relationships, your thinking, your world.

To please God we got to plant the seeds, water, wait patiently for growth and harvest it when it’s ripe for picking. When that job opportunity appears to remain elusive, when you’re struggling to start your business, when your relationships are hitting a wall, when you feel like your stagnating in in one spot. Ask yourself this….you want fruit, but are you watering your seeds? Is it that the door is closed. Or is it in fact open, but your just to fearful to push it open?

Is it that the door isn’t closed, you’re just fearful to push it open?

No one can complete YOUR ASSIGNMENT from God but you. No one can start that blog, write that book, be an activist in that area, start that specific YouTube channel but YOU. It is why we are all gifted in different ways. When you reach those pearly gates, God will ask what you’ve done with the talents, gifts and ANOINTING he gave to you. We are all anointed to complete our assignments.

Step out and WALK BY FAITH now. It’s YOUR move.
