“Resisit the devil, and he will flee from you.” -James 4:7 KJV
I really enjoy resistance training at the gym. It helps me to build muscle mass and I slowly gain strength to add more weight or work towards my next dead lift goal. But what I’ve noticed lately, is that whilst I have faith and trust in my ability to reach the next level of resisitance training, I don’t always have the faith needed to ‘Resist the devil’, as in his lies.
In John 10:10 the Bible states that “A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy.” Everything that God has given to you the devil is hell bent on destroying in your life. He sees your God given talent, he sees your relationships thriving, he sees the passions God has placed on your heart and he knows that if he can keep you down you will never reach your God given purpose. So he looks you up and down and he starts picking at the scars that you have healed from and digging he fingernails into the scabs you are trying to heal from. Whispering in your ear. I’ll be honest, the devil sure has been a good student around me of late. What do I mean by that? Well, he has watched me in my low moments and then the whispering begins. ‘Your partner doesn’t love you’,’Your family have forgotten about you.’, ‘You can’t write that book’, ‘You’ll never make it’,’Give up, you can’t do all those things God told you to do.’, ‘Who are you to think you can do God’s work?’. Yes, oh he is good. He is in the business of studying me and sometimes his darn good at it. He studies our character and our weaknesses. He waits and then when we slightly faulter from God’s he swoops in and often knocks us off our feet. Yes satan studies you, but the good news is your God fights for you.
Satan studies you, but God fights for you.
But just like at the gym, when the weights gets a little heavy and you want to give up, you just have to push a little harder. When satan pushes all of your negative buttons you have to push back harder and harder. You have to become spirtually resistant to the devils schemes and lies. How do we do that? By putting on the full armour of God daily and using scripture to fight against the devils lies. God fights for you but he also gave you the weapons you needed to fight the negative battles in your mind to.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.Ephesians 6:10-17 New International Version
When the devil says ‘ You are weak.’, You say well…I know, but… ‘He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.’ -(Isaiah 40:29 NIV). When the devil says ‘Your poor, you always will be poor’, You say sure, for now I’m poor in some areas but, I’m going to ‘Lift up my eyes,my heavenly Father waits to bless me in inconceivable ways to make my life, what it never could be’, when the devil says ‘ aren’t you worried that your life isn’t heading anywhere?’, ‘You say well, I can’t yet see aorudn that corner but, ‘the birds dont sow ‘ reap or gather and yet the heavenly father feeds them. So, he will feed me as he told me I am worth so much more’ – (Matthew 6:27)
So just as I use my gym goals or next weight lifting goal to help me in my physical gym workouts, I too need too build up resistance in my spiritual gym. Use the enemy as your spiritual gym. Push that weight a little harder. Push the negative thoughts and close off and become resilient to the devils lies.
Be filled with the Spirit as the spirit fights in, for and through you and once we are able to reach the place where the enemy knows he can no longer fight you on a particular front he will try a new avenue. But when that happens, we pick up that sword again and start weilding in defiance. Sometimes we can forget to kill those doubts, fears and negative thoughts in their infancy. We allow them to grow to toddler, teenager or sometimes even adult stature. It’s harder to push over a full grown adult than it is a toddler. You have to fight when those thoughts are weakest. Don’t give them room to grow. Stunt the growth and push them way, way out of that door. Don’t let them follow you through the gate God made for you to stand tall and walk through.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.Ephesians 6:18 -New International Version
You have to remain victorious. With each victory you will become strong enough to defeat him on every front. And just like when trainign in the gym you’ll soon have enough resistance training to walk in all of the truths God laid out for you and to fulfil all of the promises he gave you.
Dont’ be gullible in regard to smooth-talking evil. Stay alert like this, and before you know it the God of peace will come down on Satan with both feet, stomping him into the dirt. Enjoy the best of Jesus.” – Romans 16:19-20
