Reckless Love – Cory Asbury

I’ve been listening to this song for a long time now, since my friend and fellow blogger Lily Rose mentioned it in a post months ago. Every time I listen to it I discover something new that make me so grateful for the love of God.

“Before I spoke a word, You were singing over me. Before I took a breath, You breathed Your life in me.”

It relates to and always reminds me of one of my favourite bible verse from Psalms: “For you created my inmost being; You knitted be together in my mother’s womb.” Psalms 139:13

What does it mean to love recklessly?

Reckless – heedless of danger or the consequences of one’s actions; rash or impetuous.

Sounds completely different from the God who knows every hair on our heads and knitted us together before we even graced His earth doesn’t it?

But that’s just it. It’s because he knows us, he knows our quirks or personality the things that we find irksome and watches as we mess up, get it wrong, stray from the path and he loves us anyway. He knew we would mess up a million times, we’d try to ignore the life he’d planned for us and plan our lives to our own agendas and yet he loves us anyway.

He watches on as we hurt each other daily in thought, in word and in deed and he loves us anyway. He knows what we will do before we think it, say it or do it and yet despite knowing all of this he gambles and loves us anyway. That is what it means to love recklessly.

Loving despite knowing we are only human and will hurt him and one another is reckless love. The purest form of love.

How can we love recklessly?

It’s not easy for humans to forgo caution and love each other with reckless abandonment. We often get scared. Scared of being hurt by someone, fearful that they won’t love us back and we often feel that to love someone there needs to be a reason for us to show them and express love towards them. The other person needs to have done something in return for that love.

“And I couldn’t earn it, I don’t deserve it, still, You give Yourself away.”

God loves us even though we are flawed. He loves us even when we don’t show him love. He loves us even when we run. He doesn’t love us because we love him. He just gives us love freely.

Humans hurt each other and it is hard to love someone. Hard to forgive, to not feel bitter or resentful towards each other sometimes. To lack patience.

But if we are to try to live in the image of Christ we must try to love each other. Our family, friends and the world with reckless abandonment. To take that leap of faith and step out into the world and try to love even when you may feel they don’t deserve your love.

To open up our hearts, shine a light into other peoples darkness, fight for our foes and tear down the lies that make humans hurt and feel worthless and go out and speak truths into their lives. An unquestioning love, a love without conditions.  To go out seek people and empower them in the truth they are loved. To love like God loves us. With a RECKLESS LOVE.
